Synopsis
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight changes, and time all take a toll on breast shape and position. If your breasts have lost their youthful lift or your nipples point downward, a breast lift, also called mastopexy, can restore a more elevated, balanced contour without necessarily changing your size.

At SixSurgery Toronto, our board-certified surgeons customize every breast lift to the individual patient. There is no one-size-fits-all technique here. We take the time to understand what bothers you and design a surgical approach that gives you results you will genuinely love.

What is a Breast Lift (Mastopexy)?

A breast lift is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin, reshapes the breast mound, and repositions the nipple and areola to a higher, more forward-facing position. It corrects the sagging and drooping that develops over time without significantly changing your breast size.

Many patients combine a breast lift with augmentation (implants or fat transfer) to restore both position and volume, particularly after weight loss or breastfeeding. Others prefer a lift alone to achieve a perkier shape while keeping their natural size.

Breast Lift Techniques: Which Type Is Right for You?

The right technique depends on the degree of sagging (called ptosis) and the amount of excess skin that needs to be removed. Your surgeon will assess your breast tissue, skin laxity, and nipple position during your consultation to recommend the most appropriate approach.

Technique
Best For
Scarring
Lift Achieved
Periareolar (Donut Lift)
Mild sagging, minimal skin excess
Circular scar around areola
Subtle
Vertical (Lollipop Lift)
Moderate sagging
Around areola + vertical line to breast crease
Moderate to significant
Anchor (Wise Pattern)
Significant sagging, large skin excess
Around areola + vertical + horizontal under breast
Most significant

Scars from a breast lift fade significantly over time and are positioned so they can be concealed by a bra or swimwear. Your surgeon will discuss exactly which incision pattern is appropriate for your anatomy and show you where scarring is expected.

Who is an Ideal Candidate?

A breast lift may be right for you if you experience any of the following:

Breasts that sag, droop, or sit lower than they used to

Nipples that point downward or fall below the breast crease

Areolas that have stretched or enlarged

Breasts that appear elongated or flat rather than round and full

Loss of breast volume and shape after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss

Significant asymmetry in breast height or position

Good candidates are in good overall health, are at or near their stable goal weight, are non-smokers (or committed to quitting several weeks before and after surgery), and have realistic expectations about the results and scars associated with this procedure.

If you are planning to have children in the future, your surgeon may recommend waiting, as future pregnancies can affect the results of a breast lift.

The Procedure: What to Expect

Breast lift surgery is performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure at our fully accredited surgical facility in downtown Toronto. Here is a general overview of what happens on the day of surgery.

Consultation review

Your surgeon reviews your surgical plan, markings are made on the skin to guide incision placement, and photos are taken for reference.

Anesthesia

General anesthesia is administered by a certified anesthesiologist. You will be completely comfortable throughout the procedure.

Incisions and reshaping

The surgeon makes the planned incisions, removes excess skin, reshapes the breast mound, and elevates the nipple and areola to a more youthful position

Closure and assessment

Incisions are closed, and your position is evaluated upright to assess symmetry and shape before final closure.

Recovery room

You will recover in our monitored recovery suite before going home with a trusted companion. Detailed aftercare instructions and a follow-up schedule are provided.

Surgery typically takes 2 to 3.5 hours, depending on the technique used and whether additional procedures are combined.

Can I Combine a Breast Lift with Augmentation?

Yes, and this is a very common combination. A lift addresses position and shape, while augmentation adds volume. Many patients benefit from both simultaneously, particularly those who have lost volume after breastfeeding or significant weight loss.

This combined procedure can be performed with traditional implants (silicone or saline) or with fat transfer for a more modest, natural volume increase. Your surgeon will assess whether combining procedures makes sense for your anatomy and goals, and will explain what is achievable in a single surgical session.

      Recovery Timeline

      First 48 hours

Rest at home. Expect swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort. Pain medication is prescribed.

      Days 3 to 7

Swelling peaks then begins to subside. A supportive surgical bra is worn continuously.

      1 to 2 weeks

Most patients return to light desk work. Avoid lifting anything over a few pounds.

      2 to 4 weeks

Light activity and walking are encouraged. No upper body exercise yet.

      4 to 6 weeks

Most patients are cleared to resume exercise and normal physical activity.

      3 to 6 months

Swelling fully resolves. Scars begin to soften and fade.

      12 to 18 months

Scars continue to fade. Final results fully visible.

A supportive surgical bra is typically worn for 4 to 6 weeks after surgery. Sleeping on your back is recommended for the first few weeks. Your surgeon will provide individualized aftercare instructions and schedule follow-up visits to monitor your healing.

      Breast Lift  FAQs

Will a breast lift change my size?

A breast lift on its own does not significantly change your breast size. It reshapes, lifts, and repositions. If you also want more volume, your surgeon can discuss combining your lift with implants or fat transfer.

How visible are breast lift scars?

All breast lifts leave some degree of permanent scarring. Scars are placed strategically so they can be concealed by a bra or swimwear, and they typically fade from red or pink to light, inconspicuous lines over 12 to 18 months. The periareolar technique leaves the least visible scar; the anchor technique leaves the most, though it also provides the greatest degree of lift.

How long do breast lift results last?

Results from a well-performed breast lift are long-lasting. The breast tissue has been physically reshaped and repositioned, so the improvement does not simply fade. Over time, natural aging, gravity, and weight changes can gradually affect the results, but most patients enjoy their outcome for many years.

Can I breastfeed after a mastopexy?

Most women retain the ability to breastfeed after a breast lift. The nipple is not detached during the procedure in most techniques, which preserves the milk ducts. There is always some variation between individuals, and this is worth discussing in detail with your surgeon before proceeding if future breastfeeding is a priority.

      Is a breast lift painful?

Discomfort after breast lift surgery is manageable for most patients with prescribed pain medication. The first few days tend to involve the most soreness, which gradually improves. Most patients describe the discomfort as tightness rather than sharp pain.

Should I wait until after having children to get a breast lift?

Pregnancy and breastfeeding can affect the results of a breast lift, so if you are planning to have children in the near future your surgeon may recommend waiting. However, this is a personal decision and depends on your individual circumstances. Your surgeon will help you weigh the options at your consultation.

What is the difference between a breast lift and a breast reduction?

A breast lift reshapes and elevates the breast without significantly reducing size. A breast reduction removes breast tissue to make the breasts smaller and lighter, and typically also lifts and reshapes in the process. If you are unhappy with both the size and the position of your breasts, a reduction may be a better option. Your surgeon will discuss both procedures with you if relevant.

How is the nipple repositioned during a breast lift?

The nipple and areola are moved upward to a higher position on the breast mound while staying attached to the underlying tissue. This preserves sensation and the ability to breastfeed in most cases. The areola can also be reduced in size at the same time if desired.
