Synopsis
Hair loss is one of the most common concerns we see at SixSurgery, and it is one that affects far more people than most realize. Roughly 70% of men and around 50% of women will experience meaningful hair thinning at some point in their lives. For some patients, it starts with a gradually receding hairline in their twenties. For others, it is diffuse thinning at the crown that becomes harder to conceal over time. Whatever the pattern, the emotional weight of losing your hair is real, and it deserves a real solution.

A hair transplant permanently moves healthy, DHT-resistant follicles from donor areas on your scalp to thinning or bald zones. Because these follicles come from your own body, they continue to grow for life, blend naturally with your existing hair, and require no special maintenance.

At SixSurgery, our board-certified plastic surgeons perform FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction), FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation), and PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) treatments, tailoring the approach to your hair type, degree of loss, and aesthetic goals.

What Is a  Hair Transplant?

A hair transplant is a surgical procedure that takes healthy hair follicles from a donor area (typically the back or sides of your scalp, where hair is genetically resistant to loss) and moves them to areas where hair has thinned or stopped growing.

Once the transplanted follicles settle in and begin to grow, they behave exactly like your natural hair. You can wash it, style it, cut it, and grow it out. No special products, no ongoing treatments required, and no one will be able to tell you had it done.

There are two main techniques used today: FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) and FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation). Both are performed at SixSurgery in partnership with Nova Solutions, where the team will recommend the approach that makes the most sense for your hair type, the extent of your hair loss, and your personal goals.

    • You have access to SixHair experts directly, not just through a patient coordinator

We partnered with Nova Solutions to bring you hair experience matched with cosmetic surgical experience.

FUE vs FUT: What Is the Difference?

Not every hair transplant is the same. The two most common techniques have different strengths, and the right choice depends on your individual situation. Here is a straightforward comparison:

    Feature
    FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)
    FUT (Follicular Unit Transplant)
    How it works
Individual follicles are extracted one by one using a micro punch tool
A thin strip of scalp is removed from the donor area; follicles are then separated and transplanted
    Scarring
Tiny dot scars scattered across donor area, virtually undetectable with short hair
Fine linear scar along the back of the head, concealed by hair growth
    Graft volume
Excellent for small to medium sessions (1,000 to 3,500 grafts)
Better suited for larger sessions requiring high graft counts
    Recovery time
Typically 5 to 10 days before returning to most activities
7 to 14 days; suture removal at around day 10 to 14
    Ideal for
Patients who wear hair short, active lifestyles, smaller areas to cover
Patients needing maximum coverage in a single session
    Scarring concern
Minimal; preferred for those wanting to shave head
Linear scar present; less suitable for very short hairstyles
    FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)
FUE is the current gold standard for hair transplantation and the most commonly performed technique at our clinic. Individual follicular units, each containing one to four hairs, are extracted one by one from the donor zone using a small circular punch tool, typically less than one millimetre in diameter. The extracted grafts are then placed into tiny recipient sites created at the correct angle and direction to match your natural growth pattern.

FUE leaves no linear scar, which means patients can wear their hair short after healing. Recovery is faster than older strip methods, and skilled technique produces results that are virtually indistinguishable from naturally growing hair. Most FUE sessions involve between 1,500 and 4,000 grafts depending on the degree of loss, though larger sessions of 4,000 to 6,000 grafts are possible for patients with good donor density.

    FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation)
FUT, sometimes called the strip method, involves removing a thin horizontal strip of donor scalp from the back of the head, then dissecting it under magnification to separate individual follicular units. The wound is closed with sutures, leaving a fine linear scar that is concealed by surrounding hair.

FUT allows a very large number of grafts to be harvested in a single session and is still used in specific cases where maximum graft yield is the priority. It is less commonly chosen by patients who prefer to wear their hair very short, since the scar becomes visible at close-cropped lengths. Our surgeons discuss the trade-offs of each approach during your consultation.

Not sure which technique is right for you? That is exactly what your consultation is for. Your Hair team will assess your donor density, the pattern of your hair loss, and your lifestyle before making a recommendation.

Are You a Candidate for Hair Transplant?

Most healthy adults experiencing hair loss are candidates for a hair transplant, but it is not the right fit for everyone. During your consultation, your SixHair experts will review a few key factors:

    • The extent and pattern of your hair loss, including how stable it is
    • The quality and density of your donor hair, which determines how many grafts can be harvested
    • Your age and whether hair loss is still progressing
    • Your overall health and medical history
    • Your hair texture, thickness, and colour, all of which affect how the transplanted hair will look

Hair transplants work well for male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia), hairline recession, crown thinning, and some cases of hair loss in women. They can also be used for beard and eyebrow restoration.

If you are not yet a candidate due to ongoing or unpredictable hair loss, SixHair experts will be upfront about that and discuss other options.

    The Norwood Scale for Men

Male pattern baldness is staged using the Norwood-Hamilton scale, which runs from Class I (minimal recession) through Class VII (extensive crown and top loss with only a narrow band of donor hair remaining). As a general guide:

    • Norwood Class II to III: 1,000 to 1,800 grafts to restore a natural hairline
    • Norwood Class III to IV: 2,000 to 3,500 grafts for hairline and mid-scalp coverage
    • Norwood Class IV to V: 3,500 to 5,000 grafts for comprehensive front-to-crown coverage
    • Norwood Class V to VI: 5,000 to 6,500 grafts, potentially across two sessions

Graft counts are always confirmed during your consultation. Factors like follicle density, caliber, and scalp laxity all influence how many grafts can be safely harvested in a single session.

    The Norwood Scale for Men

Hair transplantation is an option for women, though the approach differs significantly from male cases. Female hair loss most commonly presents as diffuse thinning across the top of the scalp rather than defined bald zones, which means the surgery focuses on improving density rather than restoring a completely bare area. The Ludwig scale is used to classify female pattern hair loss from Grade I (mild thinning) to Grade III (extensive thinning with visible scalp).

Women are generally good candidates when they have stable pattern hair loss with a band of resistant donor hair at the back. Women experiencing alopecia due to traction, trauma, or prior surgery are also strong candidates. Because female hair loss can have hormonal, nutritional, or autoimmune causes, we recommend a thorough medical evaluation prior to surgery to address any underlying contributors.

    Day of the Procedure

    Consultation

Everything starts with a thorough consultation. Your hair team will examine your scalp, assess your donor area, talk through your goals, and explain exactly what is possible. This is the time to ask every question you have, and there are no commitments required.

    Day of the Procedure

Hair transplant procedures at SixSurgery are done as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia, so you are awake and comfortable the entire time. Here is a general walkthrough of what the day looks like:

    • You arrive in the morning and change into a comfortable gown
    • A final review of the hairline design takes place, and photos are taken for reference
    • Local anesthesia is applied to the donor and recipient areas
    • For FUE procedures, the donor area is trimmed short before extraction begins
    • Grafts are carefully harvested and examined under magnification to ensure quality
    • The transplanted follicles are placed with precision, matching your natural growth direction and angle
    • The procedure takes between 4 and 8 hours depending on the number of grafts

Most patients find the experience far more comfortable than expected. You are free to listen to music, a podcast, or just rest during the longer harvesting and planting stages.

    Hair Transplant  Recovery Time

Recovery is one of the things people worry most about before booking, and the reality is much easier than most people expect. Here is what typically happens:

    First 24 to 48 hours

Some redness and minor swelling around the transplanted area and forehead. You can go home the same day.

    Days 2 to 5

Tiny scabs form around the transplanted follicles. This is completely normal. Avoid scratching or disturbing the area.

    Day 3 to 5

Gentle washing can begin with a mild shampoo, avoiding direct water pressure on the grafts.

    Day 7 to 14

Scabs fall away naturally. Most patients feel comfortable returning to work within a week.

    1 to 3 months

Transplanted hairs shed (this is normal and expected). The follicles are alive and growing underneath.

    4 to 6 months

New hair growth becomes visible. Many patients notice real difference at this stage.

    12 to 18 months

Full results are visible. Hair continues to grow permanently from this point.

Most patients can return to desk work within a couple of days and resume strenuous activity like exercise or heavy lifting after one to two weeks.

    When Will You See Results?

Patience is a big part of the hair transplant journey. Most patients see initial growth starting around months 4 to 6, with noticeable density building through month 9. The full result, including maximum density and natural texture, settles in somewhere between 12 and 18 months.

Some patients use Minoxidil (Rogaine) topically after the procedure to support growth and address any non-transplanted thinning areas. Your SixHair experts will advise on whether this is appropriate for your case.

Hair Transplants for Men and Women in Toronto

    Hair Transplants for Men

Male pattern baldness is by far the most common reason men pursue a hair transplant. Whether you are dealing with a receding hairline in your twenties or significant crown thinning later in life, the key is timing the procedure correctly and having a long-term plan.

SixHair experts design hairlines that look natural both now and in 20 years, taking into account how hair loss typically progresses with age and genetic patterns.

    Hair Transplants for Women

Hair loss affects roughly 50 percent of women at some point in their lives, but female hair transplants are still underdiagnosed and underperformed. Women typically experience diffuse thinning rather than complete baldness, which requires a different approach to graft placement and density planning.

SixSurgery treats female hair loss patients with the same level of surgical attention. Candidacy assessment is important here because some types of female hair loss respond better to non-surgical management, and SixHair experts will be honest about your options.

Beyond the Scalp: Beard and Eyebrow Transplants in Toronto

The cost of a hair transplant in Toronto varies based on the number of grafts needed, the technique used, and the complexity of the procedure. Most sessions in the Toronto market range from approximately $6,000 to $15,000 CAD, with pricing typically structured per graft.

At SixSurgery, pricing is transparent and provided after your consultation once the exact graft count has been assessed. Financing options are available to help spread out the cost over time.

It is worth noting that the cheapest option is rarely the safest or most effective when it comes to surgical hair restoration. The most important investment is in the skill of the surgeon performing the procedure.

    Hair Transplant FAQs

    What causes hair loss?

The most common cause is androgenetic alopecia, which is hereditary and can begin as early as your twenties. Other causes include autoimmune conditions like alopecia areata, hormonal changes, nutritional deficiencies (especially iron), certain medications, thyroid disorders, and chronic physical or psychological stress. A consultation with SixHair experts will identify what is driving your hair loss before recommending treatment.

How long does a hair transplant procedure take?

It depends on the number of grafts. Smaller sessions of 1,000 to 1,500 grafts typically take 4 to 5 hours. Larger sessions of 3,000 or more grafts can take 7 to 8 hours. The procedure is done in a single day as an outpatient treatment.

    Is a hair transplant painful?

No. The procedure is done under local anesthesia, so you will not feel any pain during the transplant itself. The anesthesia injections at the beginning may cause brief discomfort, similar to what you would experience at the dentist. Most patients report that the recovery is far less uncomfortable than they expected.Stop smoking completely well before your procedure. Tell your surgeon about all medications and supplements as some may need to be stopped in advance. Arrange for someone to drive you home and stay with you post-op. Follow all pre-op instructions provided by the SixSurgery nursing team.

    What is the success rate?

When performed by an experienced surgeon, modern hair transplants have a graft survival rate of over 90 to 95 percent. The key variable is the skill of the surgeon and how well the follicles are handled during extraction and placement.Arm liposuction removes excess fat but does not address loose skin. An arm lift (brachioplasty) removes both excess skin and fat. If your concern is primarily fat with minimal skin laxity, lipo may be sufficient. If you have loose hanging skin, you will likely need a brachioplasty.

How many grafts will I need?

This varies significantly depending on the extent of your hair loss and the look you are going for. A minor hairline correction might need 800 to 1,500 grafts. More extensive coverage of the crown and mid-scalp typically requires 2,500 to 4,000 grafts. Your SixHair experts will give you a precise estimate at your consultation.

    When will I see results?

Initial growth typically starts around 4 to 6 months post-procedure. Density builds noticeably through month 9 and the full result is visible between 12 and 18 months. Transplanted hair is permanent and continues to grow for life.

Will the transplanted hair look natural?

Yes, when done well. Modern FUE techniques with proper angle, direction, and density control produce results that are completely undetectable. The key is choosing a surgeon who understands hairline aesthetics and has the precision to execute it correctly.

    Will there be visible scarring?

With FUE, tiny dot-shaped scars are left in the donor area, but they are small enough to be concealed even with shorter hair. With FUT, a thin linear scar remains at the back of the scalp, which can be covered by hair grown to a moderate length. The SixHair experts will help you understand what to expect based on the technique used.

How many sessions will I need?

Many patients achieve their goals in a single session. Others may return for a second session if hair loss has progressed over time or if they want additional density. There is no standard answer, and your long-term plan should be discussed during your initial consultation.

Can I combine a hair transplant with PRP treatment?

Yes. PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) therapy is often used alongside or after a hair transplant to support healing, encourage graft survival, and address any ongoing non-transplanted hair thinning. Ask about PRP during your consultation.

Is it safe to drive home after the procedure?

You will receive oral sedation before the procedure, so you should not drive yourself home. Plan to have a family member or friend pick you up, or arrange a ride.

Can I wash my hair after the transplant?

You can gently rinse the donor area within 24 hours. Gentle washing of the transplanted area typically begins around day 3 to 5 using a soft, diluted shampoo and light patting motions. No vigorous scrubbing for at least the first two weeks.

Is a hair transplant worth it?

For most patients who are good candidates, yes. A well-performed hair transplant is a one-time procedure with permanent results. Compared to the cumulative cost and ongoing maintenance of topical treatments or hairpieces, it is often the most cost-effective long-term solution.

Does it matter if I am getting a transplant for my beard or eyebrows?

The fundamental technique (FUE) is the same, but the artistic execution is quite different. Facial hair transplants require a deep understanding of natural growth patterns, angles, and density in a much smaller and more visible area. Your SixHair experts has extensive experience with beard and eyebrow restoration alongside scalp procedures.

Can I get a hair transplant to fix a bad previous result?

Yes. Hair transplant repair is a specialized service we offer. Poor results from previous clinics, including pluggy hairlines, unnatural direction, visible scarring from old strip methods, or insufficient coverage, can often be corrected through careful FUE or DHI work. Repair cases require additional planning and are discussed in full during a dedicated consultation.

    Do you treat out-of-town patients?

Yes. SixSurgery works with patients from across Canada and internationally. Virtual consultations are available, and the team can help coordinate travel and accommodation for your procedure date.
