Gynecomastia is the development of excess glandular breast tissue in males. It is different from pseudogynecomastia, which is enlargement of the chest caused primarily by fat accumulation rather than glandular tissue growth. Many men have a combination of both.
The condition is typically caused by hormonal imbalances between testosterone and estrogen, though other contributing factors include puberty, weight fluctuations, certain medications, steroid use, and natural aging. In most cases, gynecomastia does not resolve on its own once it has stabilized past puberty, and diet and exercise have limited impact on true glandular tissue.
Understanding the underlying cause matters for determining the right treatment approach. Common causes include:
Gynecomastia surgery may be right for you if:
You have enlarged breast tissue that has been present for more than a year and has not resolved on its own
The condition is causing you emotional distress or affecting your daily life, social activities, or relationships
You are at or near a healthy, stable weight
You do not have underlying health conditions that could have caused or be contributing to the gynecomastia that remain untreated
You are in good general health
You have realistic expectations about results
We understand that this is a sensitive and personal concern. At SixSurgery Toronto, every consultation is handled with complete discretion. Our surgeons take the time to understand your situation, assess your chest tissue, and explain exactly what surgery can realistically achieve for you.
We welcome patients from Toronto, the GTA, and from across Canada. Virtual consultations are available for out-of-town patients.
Outpatient procedure. Go home the same day with a trusted companion.
Rest at home. Some swelling, bruising, and soreness in the chest. Pain medication prescribed.
Soreness improves. Most daily activities can be resumed gently. A compression vest is worn.
Most patients return to desk work within 7 to 10 days.
Compression garment worn continuously for 3 weeks, then during the day for 3 more weeks.
Most patients are cleared for strenuous exercise and physical activities.
Swelling fully resolves. Final chest contour becomes visible.
A compression vest or binder is a critical part of recovery. It reduces swelling, helps compress the skin into its new contour, and minimizes the risk of fluid accumulation. Your surgeon will provide detailed post-operative instructions and schedule follow-up appointments throughout your recovery.
Gynecomastia surgery produces a dramatic improvement in chest appearance. Most patients experience a significant boost in confidence after surgery, feeling comfortable for the first time going to the beach, wearing fitted clothing, or changing in a gym locker room without self-consciousness.
Results are permanent. The glandular tissue that is surgically removed will not return. Maintaining a healthy, stable weight helps preserve the contouring achieved through liposuction.
Liposuction and thigh lift are a common pairing because they address two different problems: liposuction removes unwanted fat volume, while the thigh lift corrects the resulting or pre-existing loose skin. When combined, your surgeon will typically perform the liposuction first, then allow the tissue to settle before making the lift incisions.
Not every patient needs both. Your surgeon will assess your tissue composition during consultation and recommend whether liposuction adds meaningful value to your specific case.
Yes. The glandular breast tissue removed surgically does not grow back. The fat removed through liposuction is also permanently gone, though significant weight gain after surgery can cause fat to accumulate elsewhere in the chest area.
